Ryan Lory is Executive Chef of the acclaimed Charlie Palmer Steakhouse in Midtown Manhattan. His story emphasizes the dedication needed to succeed in this industry that is one of the the cornerstones of True Cooks’ ethos. It also illustrates that overcoming hardship frequently leads to greater opportunities.
Lory’s journey begins in New Jersey where he discovered the culinary world through working at his uncle’s restaurant in high school. Through that experience, he aspired to one day open his own. During his undergrad years in West Virginia, Lory developed some serious addiction issues that lead him to rehab in California after graduation. It was a blessing in disguise. Once sober, he decided to stay out out west and attend culinary school at the Art Institute of Southern California.
Upon completing his program, Lory returned to Jersey and opened Bistro Rylo—which failed miserably after just 11 months. This opened the door for his move to New York which set him on the path to where he is today. It’s a reminder that adversity breeds success – an important truth anyone going through a difficult time in life should remember.
